'Space – the last frontier' was officially inaugurated on the 10 of October by Jose Mariano Gago, the Portuguese Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

This exhibition is being held at Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Ciência Viva in Lisbon, Portugal, until August 2009. It is designed for a public of all ages and covers many space activities, focusing on the role played by satellites in our daily life and on the results achieved by astronauts carrying out experiments in microgravity conditions.

A special dedicated area shows spectacular images and video clips with the latest results from ongoing ESA space missions and Europe's challenging programmes for the immediate future. The public is introduced to launchers, satellite navigation, telecommunications and Earth observation. They can learn more about satellites and probes currently travelling around the solar system and beyond.

One of the major attractions of the exhibition is a model of the International Space Station, ISS, highlighting two very important events for Europe: the launch of the Columbus space laboratory that was successfully docked with the ISS in 2008 giving us a permanent presence in orbit; and the launch of the Automated Transfer Vehicle, ATV.

'Space – the last frontier' will be complemented with a series of workshops and talks organised in cooperation with ESA in order to increase public knowledge of space.
An estimated 250,000 visitors are expected to attend this event
