This is a composite image of the Martian volcano Olympus Mons and Italy, comparing the size of the volcano to a well-known Earthly reference. Olympus Mons is the largest volcanic feature known in our Solar System, with a diameter of about 600 kilometres. The Olympus Mons image was taken by NASA's Viking mission.
Here we also see Sicily and the 'boot' of Italy. From heel to toe, Italy is about 350 kilometres wide. Sicily measures about 270 kilometres long by 200 kilometres wide.
