Methane plume (CH4) measured from an aircraft over coal mine ventilation shafts in support of the development of ESA’s CarbonSat candidate mission. The Mamap instrument used to measure the plume helps demonstrate the feasibility of CarbonSat, which aims to image atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO2) and methane from space. The position of the coal mine ventilation shafts are marked with black crosses and the plumes, sketched in brown/red, are extrapolated from the data.
