This graph shows the distribution of forest types in the three areas of study: the Amazon, Central Africa and Borneo. Using satellite data, a team of international researchers quantified the rates of carbon recovery in different forest types and environments across these three large tropical forests.
Old-growth forests refers to forests that have developed naturally over a long period of time and have never been significantly disturbed by human activities. Degraded forests refer to forests that have been damaged or destroyed by human activities such as logging, farming or development. Secondary forest refers to forests that have regrown after a period of disturbance or deforestation but have not yet reached the complexity and ecological functions of old-growth forests. Other refers to other non-forest lands.
