ESA Education Office in collaboration with the Directorate of Connectivity & Secure Communications, is pleased to announce the ESA Academy’s  Satellite Communication Systems Training Course 2023. This intensive four-day training session will be held from 28 November to 1 December at ESA Academy's Training and Learning Facility in ESEC-Galaxia, Belgium. Geared towards Master’s and Ph.D. level students in engineering and scientific disciplines, this course is meticulously crafted to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in the field of satellite communications.

In the contemporary world, space-based telecommunication stands as an indispensable linchpin, enabling global connectivity and ensuring secure communications while underpinning an extensive range of ground-breaking applications. These encompass vital functions such as satellite broadcasting, high-speed internet provisioning, and seamless mobile network coverage, alongside fostering the advancement of global navigation, scientific research, remote sensing, telemedicine, transportation efficiency, educational access, and more. This technology empowers us to navigate with precision, explore the cosmos, monitor Earth's changes, provide healthcare remotely, optimize transportation logistics, disseminate knowledge widely, and ultimately propels innovation and societal progress across multifaceted dimensions.

Taught by experienced ESA experts, the course will be delivered through formal lectures complemented by short exercises. The training session will cover a wide range of topics such as:

  • End-to-end Satellite Communication Systems Principles
  • Satellite Communication Systems Evolution
  • Communication Satellite Payload and Platform Design
  • Antenna and Ground Segment
  • Operation and Controlling of Telecommunication Satellites

  • Legal Aspects of Space-based Communication Systems

  • Secure Space-based Communication Systems
  • Future Trends in Satellite Communication 

Upon completion of the training course, students will be evaluated and will receive a certificate of participation and a course transcript, allowing them to request ECTS credit(s) from their respective universities.

Who can apply?

Students enrolled in university who fulfill the following criteria: 

Selected students will be required to attend the entire four-day training course at ESEC. They will be sponsored by ESA Education to cover accommodation and meals as well as up to 300 Euros for travelling to Belgium. 

How to Apply?
  • Fill in the application form.
  • Upload a motivation letter (PDF, maximum 1 page, no images); 
  • Upload a CV (PDF, Europass format, no images, maximum 2 pages); 
  • Upload a formal recommendation letter (PDF, maximum 1 page, including signature, no images) from a university professor or academic supervisor of current university (if not possible to receive the recommendation letter from your reference, please ask them to send a recommendation email to tlp@esa.int before the application deadline); 
  • Upload a copy of academic records (PDF). 

All answers and documents should be in English (except academic records if not available).  

The deadline for applications is 2 October 2023, 23:59 CEST.
