Abstract: Discover the OSCAR initiative led by a team of university students. This project is making significant strides in the development of innovative magnetic field sensors for space applications, their new device OSCAR-QUBE+ is integrated into the YPSAT structure and leverages quantum principles to measure the Earth's magnetic field along the Ariane 6 trajectory.

"We are bringing quantum technology from the lab to harsh space environments, while empowering the students to step into the field of quantum and space research, and beyond".- Jaroslav Hruby, team leader of the OSCAR-QUBE+

OSCAR-QUBE+, a dynamic team of university students from Hasselt University in Belgium, is at the forefront of developing innovative magnetic field sensors for space applications. Their project, integrated in the YPSAT structure, is centred on quantum principles and diamond technology to measure the Earth's magnetic field along the trajectory of the Ariane 6 flight. This initiative, just like the YPSAT, provides students at this university a hands-on experience, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and preparing them for real-world challenges in space project development.

The OSCAR-QUBE device has already been tested aboard the International Space Station (ISS). OSCAR focuses on taking quantum sensors “from the lab to space”, emphasising miniaturisation and reliable operation in the challenging and harsh environment. The diamond-based quantum magnetometer showcases advancements in sensitivity, bandwidth, and dynamic range, while reducing power consumption, and testing its viability in space.

“The opportunity provided by working together with the YPSAT team, to improve our experiment directly after our ISS mission is so valuable. The lessons learned are mostly in the mission analysis and planning, system design for maiden flight missions, and tools for swift handling of the mission outcomes.” - Jaroslav Hruby

As with many innovative projects, the OSCAR-QUBE+ team faced unexpected hurdles, such as a shift in downlink bandwidth. OSCAR-QUBE's team demonstrated adaptability and effective communication with the YPSAT Team. This challenge prompted the development of a custom data compression algorithm, improving onboard data processing efficiency. All these tiny hurdles underscore the importance of flexibility in overcoming obstacles. The motto of the OSCAR-QUBE+ team: “Never assume anything!” also highlights how much assumptions can harm a technical project in which every single detail cannot be discussed.
