ESA / Applications / Technology Transfer

Many innovative non-space products and services used today in the medical field have originated in the technologies and systems that were developed for applications in space. In the interests of medical research, astronauts have been subjected to breathing and motion monitoring experiments during their stays in space and the scientific data gathered during those missions has enable the creation of new products, one of which may help prevent cot deaths.

Many of the complex sensors and instrumentation developed to probe the distant reaches of the Universe and the nature of stars and planets can also be adapted to assist doctors and biomedical researchers in examining the human body and detecting cancer and analysing blood flow.

The successful spin-offs described below will help you to discover the new and unexpected ways in which space activities and techniques are having an increasing impact on medicine in general and are being applied to our precious life, protecting us from illness and disease and even preventing them.
