Tracking land subsidence

The Sentinel-1 mission opens up new possibilities for many land applications. Systematic observations mean that ground movement barely noticeable in everyday life can be detected and closely monitored. Venice has been subject to floodings for hundreds of years and the problem is increasing due to sea level rise and a constant subsidence of the city. Radar images – such as those provided by Sentinel-1’s C-band synthetic aperture radar – are the best way of tracking land subsidence and structural damage.
