Radar images taken from an aircraft during the second phase of the AfriSAR campaign depict Gabon’s tropical forest in green. Pink shows where the radar signal penetrates through to the ground, so indicate cleared areas or sparser vegetation. Rivers and the ocean are also clearly visible in blue. AfriSAR supports the development of ESA’s Biomass mission that will provide measurements of forest biomass and forest height. This information will help us to understand the state of our forests and how they are changing, and advance our knowledge of the carbon cycle.
