A Research Fellowship position with ESA’s Telecommunications and Integrated Applications (TIA) Directorate is now open at the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in Oxfordshire, UK. The Directorate is responsible for co-ordinating, shaping and supporting innovation in satellite telecommunications and for promoting applications that combine space-based telecommunications, Earth observation and navigation systems.

Research Fellows bring their skills and expertise to support the development of advanced technologies and concepts and world-class products and services. Read on to find out more about this position and apply today!

Internal Research Fellow (Post Doc) in Artificial Intelligence (ECSAT)

Global Artificial Intelligence-driven Cognitive Network is ESA's new international (PCT) application. It features a cognitive-driven network architecture that autonomously explores the behaviour of centralised network topologies and improves response times by distributing decision-making capabilities across different layers of the network. The aim of the application is to optimise frequency resources while reducing spacecraft control time. The Research Fellow will propose and perform research in the field of artificial intelligence, where the concept of the above-mentioned patent could be applied to a 5G use-case scenario, with the aim of optimising resources of an integrated satellite-terrestrial network, where appropriate together with universities of ESA Member States.

You should have recently completed, or be close to completion of a PhD in on artificial intelligence, computer science, robotics or machine learning. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD.

Antonio Franchi, Head of the 5G and 6G Strategic Programme Line in the Telecommunications and Integrated Applications Directorate, describes this fellowship and the qualities of an ideal candidate:

  1. Can you tell us a little more about the Research Fellowship and the project?
Optimum utilisation of frequency spectrum is essential in order to accommodate the ever-increasing demand for connectivity and communications. With the advent of 5G and 6G systems, alongside satellite constellations and space communications, dynamic and intelligent frequency allocations are key. The Research Fellow will contribute to the interpretation, proposal and implementation of algorithms described in the ESA patent and characterise the performance of future cognitive hybrid telecommunications systems with distributed frequency assignments decisions. The convergence of multiple technologies, including AI, ML, cognitive radios and distributed decision systems, makes this a particularly interesting challenge, which promises to multiply system spectral efficiency and enable new businesses in the 5G and 6G era.
  2. What is the profile of the candidate you are looking for?
We are looking for a candidate with a good team spirit who is open to communicate with others and with self-initiative. You should have recently completed, or almost completed, a PhD in a related technical or scientific discipline.
  3. Any tips to share for candidates interested in applying?
Alongside a good motivation letter, it would be interesting if the candidate briefly described a possible approach for implementing the concepts and algorithms described in the ESA patent (for which a link is included in the vacancy notice).
