Following its hugely successful participation in 2022, ESA will be returning to Cologne, Germany, in August to participate in Gamescom, the world’s largest computer and video games fair.

Gamescom 2022 saw ESA’s largest presence at the fair to date and its appearance was met with high interest.

The ESA stand in the careers hall proved very popular and a presentation showing how gaming can support ESA space missions featured in the event programme. One of the highlights of the event was also a proud moment for ESA: when Samantha Cristoforetti tuned into Gamescom’s main stage from the International Space Station to address the attendees. We are excited to confirm that ESA will be participating in the 2023 edition of Gamescom in Cologne from 23-27 August.

Why is ESA participating in a gaming event?

There are close links between virtual worlds in gaming and ESA’s real-world space missions. Certain technology and techniques from the gaming industry are helping ESA to prepare astronauts for missions and to explore our Universe. At ESA, Virtual Reality (VR) headsets are used for simulations that immerse astronauts in settings such as the ISS or the moon to help them get familiar with their surroundings. Another crossover from the gaming world is the use of haptic feedback from games controllers, a technology through which feedback is provided through touch, that is being used by ESA to control robot rovers and robotic arms.

How can you meet up with ESA?

ESA’s booth will be in the Jobs IT Kompakt area in hall 10.2, which is a dedicated careers fair area. Stop by and speak with our representatives about opportunities at ESA – and don’t miss your chance to try out our VR experiences! Read more about Gamescom here and we’ll see you there, gamers!
