A general view of Rissik Street in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa, 1940. Both the population and the size of the city have increased greatly in the past 62 years. The city authorities now plan to reverse the urban sprawl which increases pressure on local government resources including public transport, and provision of water and sewerage facilities by its 2002 Spatial Development Framework. The plans include demarcating a fixed urban boundary, encouraging denser suburbs and implementing stricter zoning regulations.
