In a first for satellites, Proba-2 incorporates internal optical fibre sensors making pressure and temperature measurements.
The Fibre Sensor Demonstrator experiment has six fibre optic sensor lines: four of these contain multiplexed Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors - four sensors per optical fiber. Three of these are used to monitor the temperature of the xenon tank and propellant pipelines. The fourth line is used to provide redundant temperature measurements from various points around the satellite bus. In addition to these, a high temperature FBG sensor is provided for monitoring the thruster nozzle, and a pressure/temperature sensor for monitoring the Xe propellant tank pressure.
