The triple-branched radiometer of the SMOS satellite encompass more than 500 metres of optical fibre. SMOS is the first mission worldwide whose payload depends critically on the performance of optical fibre links. This represents a historical turning point for the use of light-wave technologies in spacecraft engineering.
