The application of Land Degradation Index (LDI) in Mozambique from 1998 to 2006 detected 42% of land is degraded. More importantly, 19% of land is undergoing active degradation. Positive associations between degraded states and degrading trends underpin recent and rapid desertification processes, which are occurring with high rates of change. Land degradation is particularly intense in the provinces of Manica, Nampula, Sofala and Zambezia. Open deciduous shrublands are considered to be endangered and in a terminal stage of desertification, while deciduous woodlands could be in the initial or fully developed desertification stage.
