The application of Land Degradation Index (LDI) in continental Portugal from 2000 to 2010 detected that 33% of land is degraded, while 2% shows active degradation trends. The prevalence of land management over natural processes suggests highly vulnerable agro-ecosystems. Most of deteriorated land concentrates in the northern region, while degrading trends dominate in the south-central region – which appears to be the most widely affected region.
