The south coast of New Caledonia’s main island of Grand Terre recorded more than 700 mm of rain in 24 hours at the start of July – the yearly average being roughly 1100 mm. The Galileo ground station near the capital Nouméa was caught in the deluge, with its approach road washed away. Technicians manning the ground station were marooned for 40 hours until host entity TDF and the local authorities could repair the road.
