This image was taken by ESA’s Mars Express on 23 January 2014. It shows the Hellas Chaos region, in the southern central part of the giant Hellas basin, dusted with a carbon dioxide frost. It is a typical ‘periglacial’ terrain, resulting from freeze–thaw cycles as the seasons change.
