Recent research has led to the discovery that glacier calving can excite vigorous internal waves – a process that has been neglected in driving ocean mixing in computer models. The animation shows a computer simulation of an internal tsunami waves caused by the calving of a glacier (on the right side of the animation). The internal waves spread rapidly causing vertical mixing of temperature and salinity in the water column. Ocean mixing also influences where nutrients are in the water column and this matters for ecosystems and biodiversity.
