The Aristarchos telescope is located on mount Helmos (Aroania) in the Northern Peloponnese at an altitude of 2340 m, within one of the darkest areas in Europe. It was inaugurated in 2007 and the diameter of its primary mirror is 2.3 m. In the next few years, it will be fitted with an ESA deep space optical communication receiver system and will become one part of the ground infrastructure used by ESA to take part in the Deep Space Optical Communication technology demonstration on NASA's Psyche spacecraft.
