The KSAT Svalbard Ground Station (Svalsat) was established in 1997 and is recognised as the world’s largest polar ground station. The station currently consists of over 160 antennas. The station sits on Platåberget (Plateau Mountain) near the city of Longyearbyen. Located at 78° N, the ground station provides a unique advantage for tracking and communicating with satellites in polar orbits as it is the only station in the world that can communicate with satellites on each of their 14 daily passes. The station is part of KSAT’s global ground network, which is spread across 28 locations around the world.
