Code your mission to Mars: Artificial Intelligence in the classroom 

Dates: 17 and 24  November 2021  
Level: Open to secondary vocational* school teachers  
Time: 15h00 - 18h00 CEST 
Duration: 6 hours, divided in 2 sessions of 3h. 
Language: English 
Pre-requisites: the training assumes no previous knowledge of coding or tools. 
Certification: a certification of participation will be provided to the attendees that participate in both sessions, and complete the homework project.

In this training, we will travel to Mars to explore and investigate the Red Planet. Using the Open Roberta online simulation tool, you will use block-based programming to control a virtual Martian rover through the Mars surface. You will be challenged to identify and study the characteristics of the planet’s surface, but you will also be introduced to making your rover smarter using Artificial Intelligence elements.  

For the first time, your code will be uploaded on an educational robot in our e-technology lab, in the ESA/ESEC facilities, to actually drive on the Martian Terrain simulation table.  

This training is organized in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent analysis and Information Systems (IAIS) and KI.NRW. It is open to secondary vocational* school teachers residing and working within any ESA Member State. Teachers from Canada, Slovenia, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta may also apply, due to specific agreements with ESA.
