The project
The ground station at Villafranca is made available to the ESMO project by the European Space Agency. The ground station team is responsible for its operation. It is used as primary ground station for telemetry, telecommand and ranging (range and range rate, i.e. determination of distance and velocity of ESMO). Additionally it serves as an optional ground station for payload data downlink during transfer to the Moon (if required), and as back-up ground station for payload data downlink from lunar orbit.
