N° 29–2022: Invitation to the media: ILA Berlin

The media are cordially invited to attend a press conference with ESA Director General, Dr Josef Aschbacher, at ILA Berlin on Wednesday 22 June 2022 from 09:00–10:00 CEST.
Sustainability and climate change, digitalisation, innovation and research as well as prevention are the main themes of this year's ILA Berlin (Internationale Luft- und Raumfahrtausstellung/"Berlin Air Show") for the aerospace sector. Ministries, agencies, science and aerospace companies will jointly present their innovations and the latest developments for deployment on Earth and in space. The entire event will take place from 22 to 26 June at the Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) – www.ila-berlin.de
The first day of the show (22 June) will be held at the ILA "Space Pavilion" with the theme "A Day for Our Climate". At 10:00, the Space Pavilion will be ceremonially opened by ESA Director General Dr Josef Aschbacher, Dr Walther Pelzer (Head of the German Space Agency at DLR and DLR Executive Board member) and Marco Fuchs (German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) Vice President for Space), and other distinguished guests. The media are cordially invited to the opening. The press conference with Josef Aschbacher will be held at 09:00, followed by interview opportunities. The German ESA astronaut Dr Alexander Gerst will also be present and available for interview.
From 14:30, the official tour of the ILA by the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will begin and include top representatives from politics, industry and the aerospace sector – such as ESA Director General Dr Josef Aschbacher.
23 June is ILA Space Day, starting with a press conference on the European Service Module on NASA's Orionspacecraft, in collaboration with Europe's leading aerospace company Airbus Defence and Space. The European Service Module (ESM) is being built on behalf of NASA by ESA and the German aerospace industry, among others. The ESA Director General will then speak about megatrends in space (10:15–11:00). At 15:00, Dr Rolf Densing, ESA Director of Mission Operations, will speak about space safety, space debris and space weather.
24 June will begin at 09:00 with a press conference on Space Station Earth, led by Matthias Maurer, just back from space, and Ilan Eshkeri, the show's creator. Other themes for the day will be digitalisation, research and innovation. A highlight at the end of the day will be the Astronaut Talk with ESA astronauts Matthias Maurer and Thomas Reiter.
Further interview opportunities will include Elodie Viau (ESA Director of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications), Prof. Günther Hasinger (ESA Director of Science), Dr h.c. Thomas Reiter (former ESA Director and Astronaut)and Stefano Bianchi (Head of Development, ESA Directorate of Space Transportation).
On Saturday 25/06 and Sunday 26/06, the ILA will open its doors to the general public. The Space Pavilion will focus on the themes of earth observation and climate change, ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer will discuss astronautical research in space with his colleague Reinhold Ewald and the DLR School Lab will bring zero gravity to the stage and students can find out about careers in aerospace. Microlaunchers made in Germany, missions to asteroids and the return to the moon, challenges such as space weather and space debris and the satellite navigation of the future will all be clearly and vividly explained.
