Icebreaker 'Kapitan Khlebnikov'

Icebreaker 'Kapitan Khlebnikov'

The college student Lauren Coquille, together with 100 other people, left Port Elizabeth in South Africa on 4 November 2003 onboard the icebreaker 'Kaptain Khlebnikov', heading to Antarctica to observe the Sun eclipse of 24 November.

There were many more things to observe and to report, as Eduspace followed the expedition on a daily basis.

Lauren's classmates of College Rousseau and several other schools in Geneva, Switzerland, supported her while she travelled to Antarctica. An astrophysicist, a radio reporter, and a photographer were seconding her for the observation of the eclipse. But that's not all. On her way to Antarctica and back she had a lot of work to do, including observing the ocean, the weather, and the ice, and noting everything accurately.

She communicated the position of the ship and other observations to her classmates on a daily basis. She also observed the clouds, measured the temperature of the sea water, and determined its chlorophyll content. She also reported sightings of huge icebergs. But most importantly, she took digital photographs, which were loaded on the expedition website as soon as they arrived.
