Exercise 5: Expedition “Alive!”
You will need the following resources:
1. Have a look at the Alive in the Andes website. Is there a memorial of the tragic incident in the area where the plane crash occurred?
An expedition must be planned and organised well in advance, taking care of all the essential elements. Nowadays you can count on more advanced technological resources for navigation and survival (GPS, satellite imagery, specialised mountain equipment, etc). First a team has to be set up, and different tasks assigned to different members. You can plan this adventure as a journey on horseback, bicycle or on foot. You should organise this expedition using the available technological resources. On a satellite image or a suitable map trace all possible routes to the location of the accident. For each route, consider the quality of the roads, height differences, and any other obstacle or risk, as well as locations with infrastructure (hotel, mountain huts, mines, shops etc.). Consider escape routes and emergency measures as well. A day-by-day plan, including distances to travel and food and water consumption has to be established. Finally the best season to travel has to be chosen.
Your project must also include a detailed financial plan as well as a colourful and convincing presentation, addressing all the questions potential sponsors might have.
