Elephant Reserve


The Kameng-Sonitpur Elephant Reserve, located in the eastern hill forests of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, covers an area of approximately 7500 sq. km. The main part of the Reserve, which is about 3977 sq. km., has been taken up for this case study.

Geographically, the study area includes the eastern portion of the Darrang district, and a major part of the Sonitpur district of Assam, parts of East and West Kameng districts, and the western part of Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh between 26° 45' 00'' and 27° 04' 00'' N latitudes, and 92° 18' 30'' and 93° 21' 00'' E longitudes. The main rivers of the study area are Jia Bhareli, Dikrai, Jia Dhansiri, Bargang, Burai, Sonai Rupai, and Pachnai. This Reserve comprises the following parts of wildlife sanctuaries and reserve forests:
  • Pakke Tiger Reserve (including Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary), Arunachal Pradesh
  • Eagle Nest Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh
  • Sessa Orchid Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh
  • Reserved Forests under Khellong Forest Division., Arunachal Pradesh
  • Sonai-Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam
  • Nameri Tiger Reserve (including Nameri National Park), Assam
  • Biswanath Reserve Forest , Assam
  • Behali Reserve Forest, Assam

Land cover within the study area is divided primarily among sub-tropical evergreen, tropical semi-evergreen, tropical moist deciduous, and non-forest. The density of the population is higher on the Assam side of the study area than in Arunachal Pradesh.

The average temperature range from 7.5°C in January to 38°C in May. Relative humidity ranges from 66.74 in March to 87.48 in July. The annual rainfall of the reserve varies from 1485 mm to 2508 mm.
