Exercise 1 - Accompany a classmate - Introduction

Didier and Lauren on the ship

Didier and Lauren on the ship

School classes in Geneva followed the icebreaker's adventure to Antarctica on a map and on satellite images acquired just for this purpose.

ESA agreed to support this expedition and made the images available. Images of the ship's route were captured by ESA's Envisat satellite. Because the area to be covered by the satellite was in the extreme south, the data was retransmitted by Artemis, ESA's communications satellite, or recorded onboard and transmitted to European receiving stations when Envisat passed over them.

In this section we will follow Lauren and Didier on their way from South Africa to the Antarctic Continent and to Tasmania. Along this route, the icebreaker will pass several islands before entering the harsh and icy environment. We will trace the cruise with satellite images and photos taken onboard, and with their help, we will try to better understand the strange Southern World.

Chlorophyll concentration exercise

A separate and rather scientific section allows you to determine the chlorophyll concentration of the seawater, and hence monitor the health of the coastal waters and the open ocean. From the report delivered by the student at the end of the cruise, we will be able to extract the measurements made at sea level, and compare them with satellite observations.

You can also take it easy by following the entire Cruise...and there is ample room for working with photos taken from the ship and the satellite images received from Envisat.

Have fun!

Teacher and student worked hard during the expedition

The two Excel tables provide a summary of the scientific measurements that Lauren (student) and teacher (Didier) made during the cruise. In the 'Resultats-meteo' you will also find the daily position of the icebreaker assessed by Didier with a hand-held GPS.
