The continuously growing human population of tropical Asia has encroached upon the elephant’s dense but dwindling forest habitat. About 20 per cent of the world’s human population lives in or near the present range of the Asian elephant. Wildlife habitats in Asia, particularly in India, are facing many problems, which are contributing to man-elephant conflicts. These problems are the following:
  • Illegal encroachment and large-scale deforestation

  • Natural calamities such as floods, forest fires, etc.

  • Lack of sufficient fodder and prey

  • Lack of sufficient drinking water

  • Cattle grazing and trampling

  • Poaching and hunting

  • Extraction of firewood, timber, fodder, Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP), etc.

  • High density of wild animals

  • Proximity to human habitation, road, railways etc.

  • Social and political problems
