The Space Shuttle era lasted from 1981 to 2011 with actual flights to space, but its roots are deep in the 1960’s. Many ambitious plans for spaceplanes with airliner-type operation were proposed, but the reality stroke back and the result was a compromise: an extraordinary vehicle that could have been even better.
