Title: “1st Primary Schools’ Interplanetary Summit”

Disciplines: History, geography, language (reading, understanding and writing)

Livel: 3 star

Description: The class prepares an exhibition to make a comprehensive presentation of the Earth during the 1st Primary Schools’ Interplanetary Summit.

Objective(s): Group work and role-play. Learning about other continents and cultures. Looking for, finding, and organising information to create an exhibition and a presentation.

Hints:
This project is a WebQuest. What does that mean? It is a didactical activity based on the constructivism approach of learning; group work per project and research are the basic activities of this teaching/learning tool. The children are separated into groups, and a different role is assigned to each of them. They are asked to achieve a specific task together, which culminates in a product with specified characteristics. In order to do this, they follow a procedure with different steps or phases, previously planned by the teacher, during which the children accomplish a wide range of activities. The activities can include:

  • Reading, understanding and synthesising information sourced on the Internet or from other sources;
  • Sorting the collected information;
  • Elaborating a hypothesis;
  • Assessing and judging ideas and concepts;
  • Taking different perspectives on one topic (e.g. how would a Chinese school do this activity?)
  • Producing texts, drawings, multimedia presentations, objects;
  • Operating different devices;
  • Interviewing their family or neighbours;
  • Etc.

During this process, the teacher should make available a certain number of common resources (extracts from the Internet, books, guided visits, or other), and should also encourage the children’s independent investigation with family members, neighbours, in their local library, etc.

- The children can use the following United Nations website to look for information: http://www.un.org/Pubs/CyberSchoolBus/index.html

- The children may also take a look at some flags drawn during an ESA kids contest: http://www.esa.int/envisatcompetition/kids/index.html
