ESA showcases UK cooperation at Farnborough airshow
A packed programme of activities completed this week at Farnborough International Airshow has demonstrated how the UK’s strong contributions to ESA are advancing space ambitions across Europe.
From 22 to 26 July, ESA joined the UK Space Agency, as well as other commercial and institutional partners, at the global aerospace event to celebrate shared achievements, create new partnerships, and inspire thousands of visitors about European space activities.
ESA’s presence at Farnborough was led by the agency’s Director General Josef Aschbacher and included British ESA astronaut Rosemary Coogan, as well as British ESA astronaut reserves Meganne Christian and John McFall.
Josef Aschbacher delivered an address on the opening day that highlighted the UK’s scientific and commercial excellence and the important role of ESA’s European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in the UK.
On the second day, ESA and the UK Space Agency unveiled an ambitious joint vision for ECSAT designed to reinforce the establishment as a centre of excellence in telecommunications, gradually expand its scope to include new multidisciplinary projects, and grow its workforce over the next 10 years and beyond.
Following Farnborough’s four trade days, held from Monday to Thursday, the airshow opened its doors to thousands of members of the public on the final day the event. The public day featured Q&A sessions with Rosemary Coogan, Meganne Christian and John McFall, as well as many other discussions and panel sessions on ESA programmes and activities.
