Composite Materials structures

Launcher Structures

The Structures section actively supports the development and qualification of composite launcher structures. In addition to regular participation to design and qualification reviews for Ariane 5 and VEGA developments, specific technology projects are supported.

In FLPP, several interesting composite structure technologies are developed. The composite technologies under FLPP can be divided into two major categories; Pressurised Structures and Unpressurized structures.

Pressurised structures

  • Cryogenic Propellant Tank with Thermoset Resin
  • Cryogenic Propellant Tank with Thermoplastic Resin
  • CFRP Cryogenic Propellant Feed Line
Unpressurised Structures
  • Advanced Interfaces
  • Interstage Structures
  • U/S Novel CFRP Demonstrator, Payload Adapter
  • CFRP Engine Thrust Frame
  • Fairing

By maturing enabling technologies for challenging Launch Vehicle applications, ESA FLPP paves the way for successful developments with reduced risk of the European NGL.

Technologies are developed and matured to a TRL level high enough to enable a smooth implementation into the NGL development. A close link with FLPP System Studies ensures coherence of NGL development within FLPP.

In parallel to the technological achievements in novel materials and processes, quality is monitored and NDI methods are evaluated and developed accordingly.
