Dolf Huybrechts

Hello! I am Dolf Huybrechts and I joined the Advanced Concepts Team as a research fellow in quantum physics in 2024.

My journey in academia started at the University of Antwerp where I completed my BSc and MSc in physics, as well as my PhD in theoretical physics. During my doctoral studies I focused on the numerical description of driven dissipative many body quantum systems and the study of dissipative phase transitions. After my PhD I was a postdoctoral researcher at the École normale supérieure de Lyon where I investigated the physics of strongly-interacting open quantum systems and their entanglement properties. Now I have the exciting opportunity to continue my research as part of the Advanced Concepts Team.

In a nutshell, my research focus is on the description of interacting quantum systems in contact with an environment. More specifically, I like to study the interplay between the coherent many-body dynamics and dissipative processes who are generally entanglement destroying and cause loss of e.g. quantum information. My aim is to uncover physical phenomena that can be relevant for applications in quantum technologies, as well as to obtain fundamental insights into the physics of these systems and the laws of nature in general.

Currently, I am very interested in the development of novel numerical methods that allow for an efficient characterisation of the competition between the noise induced by the environment and the quantum processes characterising the system. The ability to efficiently describe dissipative many-body quantum systems is of fundamental interest since the understanding and control of dissipation is of great importance for the realisation of quantum technologies. In addition, I’m also very keen to explore the application of machine learning techniques and methods based on artificial neural networks to my research as well as leveraging quantum systems for machine learning problems.
