Gabriele Meoni
I am an Internal Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence, and I joined the team in September 2020. I have pursued a Master's degree in Electronic Engineering in 2016 at the University of Pisa. In May 2020 I completed my Ph.D. in Information Engineering in the same university, where I acquired skills in digital and embedded systems design, with particular focus on hardware accelerators for Digital Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications.
My passion for space applications was born during my Master's Degree thanks to the involvement in the ESA REXUS/BEXUS project, as responsible for Electronics in the U-PHOS team. That experience allowed me to get in touch with space, making me decide to focus most of my Ph.D. researches on space applications and to spend my Ph.D. period abroad at ESA ESTEC as a visiting researcher from 01/11/2018 to 28/02/2019.
During this period, I investigated the main challenges and advantages of the use of onboard AI. Part of this research was developed in the frame of the CloudScout project, which aimed to realize an in-orbit demonstrator of Deep Neural Networks on board the PhiSat1 Earth Observation satellite.
Onboard AI also represents one of my main research interests as Research Fellow in the ACT. Indeed, I am currently focusing on the research of energy-efficient AI algorithms for edge applications, with particular focus on Spiking Neural Networks. Additional research topics include semi-supervised learning for scene-classification problems.
In addition to space, during my Ph.D my research fields included Assistive Technology applications. More detailed information on my research can be found here.
In my free time, I enjoy reading and playing guitar and chess.
