With increasing space activities, a growing hazard is emerging: space debris. In 50 years of space activities, more than 4800 launches have placed some 6000 satellites in orbit, of which about 800 are still operational. What are the problems associated with the increasing number of satellites and space debris, and what measures can be taken to mitigate the situation on an international scale?
