Future space engineers at ESOC's Girls' Day event
Some 45 participants attended ESOC's Girls' Day 2007 event, designed to provide young women with more knowledge, role model contacts and inspiration towards future careers in natural science, space engineering and exploration.
The Girls' Day event at ESOC started with an early morning welcome by senior managers and a video on the role and activities of ESOC.
Participants were then divided into two teams, with each in turn taking part in a guided site tour, a presentation on ESA's highlight space missions and a workshop designed to expose girls to real aspects of work in space science and engineering.
Workshops focused on "Space in the Internet," the design of a satellite control centre, and what it means to work as a system engineer.
At all stages, participants were encouraged to ask questions of the event facilitators, consisting of experienced female managers, engineers and operations specialists from ESOC who volunteered to share their knowledge and expertise.

ESA support to youth and education
Girls' Day activities are conducted at ESA establishments through strong support from both the Agency and individual staff members.
ESA provides a wide range of support, educational materials and activities targeting the elementary, high school and university levels, all aimed at helping young Europeans gain and maintain an interest in science and technology.
