This event is organised by A|D|S, the UK Aerospace, Defence and Security trade organisation and ISIC, International Space Innovation Centre. Speakers include Chris McLaughlin, Inmarsat, Ken Ashton, NATS, Colin Hicks, Eurisy, Georgina Watts, UKTI, Martin Ditter, ESA, Sergey Zhukov, Skolkovo and Ian McMahon, Scottish Enterprise.

Space Day Conference

The UK Space Agency hosts a conference of leaders from government, space agencies and the space industry focusing on the continued growth of the UK, European and international space sectors and the prospects for the ESA Council at Ministerial level, a critical moment of decision for European space, to be held later this year.

Speakers include David Willetts, UK Minister of State for Universities and Science; Francesco Profumo, Italian Minister of Education, Universities and Research and Chair of the ESA Council at Ministerial Level; Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA Director General; Vladimir Popovkin, Head of the Russian Federal Space Agency; Enrico Saggese, President of ASI; David Williams, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency; and Andy Green, Co-Chair of the UK Space Leadership Council and CEO of Logica.

Opening keynote talk by ESA astronaut Tim Peake

A representative of the UK-ESERO, European Space Education Resource Office, will discuss online ESA resources and the National STEM Centre. This centre houses the largest open collection of resources for teachers of science, design and technology, engineering and mathematics in the UK.

The Space Growth Agenda: a plan for continued growth, jobs and innovation opportunities

In 2010, the UK space industry announced an ambitious strategy to create an industry worth £40 billion by 2030, and 100 000 new jobs in the process. Find out whether the space industry is delivering on its plan and how it is refining its strategy to meet the prevailing economic winds.

Speakers will include Lord Stephen Green, UK Minister for Trade and Investment; Catherine Mealing-Jones, UK Space Agency Director of Growth, Applications and EU Pogrammes; Magali Vaissière, ESA Director of Telecommunications and Integrated Applications; Volker Leibig, ESA Director of Earth Observation; Keith Robson, University of Surrey Director of Research and Enterprise Support; and Richard Peckham, Chair of UKspace and ADS Vice-President.

A day of activities across the airshow for young people from UK schools and universities to explore today’s innovation and discover how science, technology, engineering and mathematics can allow them to be on the leading edge of the future.

Come and meet ESA astronauts Paolo Nespoli and Tim Peake in the Space Zone, Hall 3, and learn firsthand what it takes to have the right stuff, whether in space or on Earth.

Award Ceremony, International Rocketry Challenge
Paolo Nespoli and Tim Peake will be present awards to the winners of the International Rocketry Challenge

Saturday 14 July
Public Day
ESA astronauts Paolo Nespoli and Tim Peake will make presentations in the main auditorium starting around 11:00, 12:00 and 15:00.

Paolo Nespoli will present the MagISStra mission onboard ISS from December 2010 to May 2011. Paolo carried out an intensive programme of experiments in human research, fluid physics, radiation, biology and technology demonstrations.

Tim Peake will present astronaut training activities including his recent experience at the NASA Neemo underwater base, almost 20 m under the sea off the coast of Florida. During a 12-day mission, Tim and six crewmates lived in cramped conditions, performed ‘waterwalks’ and had to solve problems as a team to test equipment and techniques for future space exploration.
