Our Ocean from Space at Ecomondo (Rimini)
Our Ocean from Space, a collaboration between UNESCO and the European Space Agency (ESA), was displayed at the Ecomondo International Fair, a major event for green and circular economy recently held in Rimini, Italy. The exhibition was presented with the support of Planetek Italia, a key partner in the project. Ecomondo brings together industrial groups, stakeholders, policymakers, opinion leaders, local authorities, research institutions, and organisations to discuss and shape strategies for advancing European environmental policies.
Showcasing at Ecomondo, a non-space-focused event, presented a unique opportunity to reach and engage a diverse audience, including professionals and decision-makers from sectors such as water management, agriculture, security, and transportation, as well as media professionals, students, and the general public.
About the exhibition
How do Earth’s oceans appear from space? What are the consequences of human activity on marine ecosystems? Satellites help to explore a wide range of scientific themes, such as the evolution of Arctic Sea ice, ocean warming, sea level rise and the impact of climate change on coral reefs and biodiversity. Our Ocean from Space highlights how crucial satellite observations of the oceans are for both marine protection and for more responsible and sustainable use of valuable ocean resources. The exhibition combines stunning satellite images from ESA and other partners with insights from scientific experts, local decision-makers, and coastal stakeholders who discuss current efforts to protect our precious marine ecosystems. The exhibition is co-produced by UNESCO and ESA, with the support of Mercator Ocean International and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Other collaborators include the French Space Agency (CNES), the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC), Planetek Italia, the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), Shom, Prométhée Earth Intelligence, and the Maldives Space Research Organization (MSRO).
