ISO image of Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)

The nearby Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) was ISO's first light target on 28 November 1995, when the telescope was opened to the sky. The infrared image shows regions of star formation along the galaxy's spiral arms and on either side of the nucleus. [Image Date: 26-11-95] [96.03.006-001]
