ERS image of Athens

This image of Athens was taken with a scatterometer aboard an ESA Earth Remote Sensing satellite. Mountains are in brown and densely populated flat areas show many white specks because buildings backscatter microwaves strongly. Coloured specks in the sea are ships at anchor at the date and time of data acquisition: red, 25 May 1996: green, 14 July 1997; blue, 1 November 1997.
