Omar Khayyam, 1048 - 1131

Persian poet, mathematician, and astronomer. Around 1074, he set up an observatory and led work on compiling astronomical tables, and also contributed to the reform of the Persian calendar. His contributions to other fields of science included developing methods for the accurate determination of specific gravity.
