Ireland - ASAR - 22 December 2002

This wide-swath radar image (400km wide) centred over the island of Ireland. Topographically, the surface of Ireland may be described as basin shaped. The chief physiographic features of the island are a region of lowlands and a complex system of low mountain ranges. Among the principal ranges are the Mourne Mountains in the northeast, the mountains of Donegal in the north, containing Mount Errigal , 752 metres, Maumturk Mountains in the west, and the Wicklow Mountains in the east. The city capitals of Belfast in the northeast (Northern Ireland) and Dublin (the Republic of Ireland) in the southeast and are visible as large bright areas. On the right side of the image is the United Kingdom and the city of Glasgow (bright area upper right).
