Named for an Egyptian goddess of truth and justice, the 8-km-high volcano Maat Mons is the second-highest mountain and highest volcano of Venus. Lava flows extend for hundreds of kilometres across the fractured plains shown in the foreground, to the base of Maat Mons.
This side-on view is reconstructed from radar data collected by NASA's Magellan mission. The viewpoint is located 560 km north of Maat Mons at an elevation of 1.7 km above the terrain. The vertical scale is exaggerated by a factor of 22.5.
