Cette vue de l'île principale de l'archipel des Kerguelen a été acquise par le radar ASAR d'Envisat en mode "large fauchée" le 29 décembre 2003. Egalement nommée "Grande Terre" - et originellement baptisée "île de la Désolation" - l'île de Kerguelen a un climat froid et balayé par les vents. Le glacier Cook est visible sur la façade occidentale. L'archipel des Kerguelen est entouré d'eaux très poissonneuses.
