Microsensors forming a wireless proximity network

After deployment, the wireless sensors would autonomously organise a proximity network. The topology of the network would gradually change as sensors failed or ran out of power. How a microsensor network ought to function is the subject of active research: what is the optimal trade-off between rate of data transmission and conservation of limited battery life?
