Early Shuttle missions made atomic oxygen finding

The Columbia orbiter receives post-landing servicing following STS-1's successful touchdown at Edwards Air Force Base on 14 April 1980. Early Shuttle missions discovered that atomic oxygen at the top of the atmosphere is highly reactive, and the Hubble solar array team flew test payloads as a result.(Image number: S-81-31913)
