Historical fire detection

Radar polarimetry data from ALOS-PALSAR have been used to show how old fire scars can be detected. As the image shows, the polarimetric return is different from the rest of the forest. Radar polarimetry appears to be uniquely capable of detecting these old scars, which can help work out how often fires are occurring.
