Changing Arctic sea ice

This unusual view is what scientists look at to analyse changes and movements of sea ice. The animation consists of Envisat ASAR mosaics of the Arctic Ocean acquired in mid-August 2011. The Arctic is one of the most inaccessible regions on Earth, so obtaining measurements of sea ice was difficult before the advent of satellites.
