Hurricane Igor changes salinity

SMOS showed that sea-surface salinity changes in the wake of a hurricane. This is the first time such changes have been detected from space. Hurricane Igor caused the freshwater plume from the Amazon River to mix with deeper saltier waters, thereby increasing the salinity of the surface layer.
